The new Stelco

Hamilton's oldest and biggest steelmaker is reinventing itself. The new business may look an awful lot like Dofasco, with specialized products and a closer alignment to automotive customers.

WHAT'S STAYING

Stelco Hamilton

An integrated steelmaking

and processing complex

* Where: Spread over 445 hectares in north Hamilton

* Makes: Hot rolled, cold rolled and galvanized sheet, rod and bars.

* Markets: Automotive, construction, manufacturing, pipe and tube and wire product sectors.

* Current employees: 4,250 in six divisions

Stelco Lake Erie

A fully integrated steelmaking facility that began in 1983

* Where: Spread over 1,650 hectares in Nanticoke, on the shores of Lake Erie.

* Makes: Hot rolled sheet and hot rolled coils

* Markets: Automotive sector as well as pipe and tube and energy markets

* Current employees: 1,350

WHAT'S GOING

At Stelco Hamilton:

* No. 2 Rod Mill (closing in September) -- 160 employees

* 56-inch Strip Mill (may close) -- 300 employees

* Two pickle lines (may close)-- 120 employees

Subsidiaries:

* Stelwire Ltd. -- current total of 400 employees in Hamilton and Burlington

* Stelfil Ltee. -- 300 employees in Lachine, Que.

* Stelpipe Ltd. -- 550 employees in Welland
