SAMPLE LETTER
The Honourable Dalton

Premier of Ontario

Dear Sir:
I am a Stelco retiree and I am writing to you because I
have serious concerns regarding the future of our pension plan payments.
As
you know, Stelco is making no solvency deficiency payments to their various
pension plans because they have been exempted from doing so as a result of
Regulation 5.1. Accordingly, the funds
are grossly underfunded on a solvency basis.
As I understand it, the reason for the exemption was based on a “too big
to fail” concept which clearly does not apply in Stelco’s case. I am therefore asking you and your
Government to rescind or modify Regulation 5.1 to force Stelco to begin funding
the deficiency, so that over a reasonable length of time it will be
eliminated. Since Stelco has recently
returned to profitability it is not only affordable but also appropriate that
this action be taken. If action is not
taken now, pensioners will be in a more precarious situation when Stelco exits
the CCAA process than they are at present.
In my view this would be unconscionable.
I
appreciate you taking the time to address this serious issue.
Yours truly,
