In late 2006, the Ontario Minister of Finance assembled a committee called the “Expert Commission of Pensions” to review pension legislation. On November 13, 2007 the commission held one its public meetings in Hamilton to receive input on pension reform.
Over the past couple of years SSPO has been very pro-active in working closely with other pensioner groups (Dupont, Investa, Bell Canada, Air Canada, Bank Of Canada, Bank of Montreal, Sears, Slater, and Labatts) to establish the Canadian Federation of Pensioners. CFP’s prime objective is to actively advocate to Government on behalf of pensioners. The CFP has already grown to represent 100,000 pensioners, and continues to attract new member pensioner organizations.
On behalf of pensioners, SSPO and the CFP presented separate briefs at the hearing containing recommendations aimed at addressing the urgent need for pension reform in Ontario, and emphasizing the need to provide for improved and better protection for the rights of pensioners and the long term security of their pensions.
The CFP presentation was the culmination of a year long collaborated effort by all member organizations.
