Dear Salaried Pensioner
It is not our policy to utilize our Website or mass e-mailer to promote the interests of a specific group retirees, however we feel that genuine efforts being made to promote wellness and health among Stelco employees and retirees may be of interest to all of our members. Therefore, at the request of the Stelco Wellness and Health Committee, your Steering Committee has agreed undertake a one time mass mailing to allow them to reach out to pensioners.
They have requested that we pass along the message below for your consideration. For those of you who are interested, we have posted a copy of their latest Stelco Wellness Newsletter at the SSPO Website for viewing.
PLEASE NOTE THAT FUTURE ISSUES WILL NOT BE POSTED TO THE SSPO WEBSITE. IF YOU WISH TO RECEIVE FUTURE ISSUES or HAVE ANY QUESTIIONS, YOU WILL NEED TO CONTACT EITHER CAM OR JIM (e-mail addresses below), NOT SSPO.

MESSAGE TO RETIRIEES FORWARDED FROM THE STELCO WELLNESS AND HEALTH COMMITTEE:
TO ALL CURRENT and RETIRED STELCO PERSONNEL
Last
February a Health and Wellness program pilot was started in one area of Stelco
Hamilton. There were a few people very interested in trying to bring a Health
and Wellness project back into existence here at Stelco. A steering committee
was put in place including a representative from Public Health and Community
Services of Hamilton. The goal was to establish a program that can help improve
the health and wellness of all our past and present employees and their
families. The pilot was met with varying degrees of success and others from
across Stelco Hamilton have already been involved; joining the pilot area in
events such as Big Bike Ride for Heart and Stroke, ‘Gym Nights’ fair and
wellness related seminars held at different times. Members of the committee
have been gaining education on Wellness by attending outside seminars and
developing contacts. A survey by a good cross-section of our employees in the
pilot area was done on this subject and has provided us with some valuable data
on our current employees needs. There
are many paths an agenda for healthy living can take. The steering group has
evolved into a working committee now and has been making progress as we expand
across Stelco Hamilton and Stelco Lake Erie. We have an outline of how we
continue but as we all know, there is much and varied experience and expertise
in the Stelco community so if you have some good ideas, call or Email Jim White
2212 or Cam Howey at 3878. We will also offer at this time to set up an E-mail
distribution list to send any communiqués, newsletters, future offers related
to Health and Wellness to your home computers so family members or retirees can
be involved. Don’t worry, we won’t inundate your system, these mailings would
be occasional; all you have to do is send your E mail address to Cam or myself
at cam.howey@stelco.ca or jim.white@stelco.ca .
Senior
management has given a green light to develop a comprehensive Health and
Wellness program and various levels of the union have given their support
and/or sit on the committee. Hopefully the future brings a stable Stelco where
we can do much more with our program. Health and Wellness may not appeal to
everyone but again, we hope as the program flourishes that some portion, some
tip, some small part will appeal or can be useful to you or your family. There
is much scientific and medical evidence that a healthy lifestyle can pay big dividends
in extending life in a manner that reduces body and mind deterioration allowing
us to enjoy life more and generally feel better. Wouldn’t you want that for
your family members, wouldn’t they want that for you? Participate where you
can.
In
good health,
Jim
White and your
Health and Wellness Committee
